This interactive “City to Serenity: Exploring the Green Heart of Washington, D.C.” highlights the surprising abundance of green spaces in the bustling capital city. Known for its political environment, Washington, D.C. now boasts a serene oasis in the form of the National Mall, a cherished national park with its verdant meadows, tranquil ponds, and lush gardens.

The Mall, originally revitalized and preserved by Senator James McMillan in the early 20th century, has become an iconic symbol of America’s beauty and history. Drawing over 25 million visitors annually, the park offers respite from city life and provides a peaceful environment where people can relax and unwind.

Despite the costs and disruptions involved in maintaining such a vast and popular park system, visitors recognize and appreciate the value placed on preserving these green spaces. The deliberate conservation of nature amidst a city filled with buildings speaks to the importance of these oases and reflects the values of both the city and the nation.
